University of Chester Riverside Museum Opens

Start Date: 7 December 2022 1:00 pm

End Date: 7 December 2022 4:00 pm

Location: Wheeler Building basement

The University of Chester Riverside Museum, run by volunteers from the Faculty of Health and Social Care Historical Society, will be open between 1pm and 4pm to welcome students, staff and other visitors. Based at the University’s Wheeler Building on Castle Drive, it contains a permanent collection of curiosities from the world of medicine, nursing, midwifery and social work, in addition to an original letter written by Florence Nightingale from Balaclava.

The First World War: Returning Home exhibition provides an insight into what a soldier invalided back from the Front would have found on his return to Cheshire. Using local examples wherever possible, the exhibition covers aspects such as medical advances, the psychological effects of war, volunteering and volunteer nurses, a doctor’s country practice, home life, working women and social welfare.

This exhibition has been created by the Faculty of Health and Social Care Historical Society volunteers and refurbished with the generous help of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Heritage. Visitors with an interest in health and social care or local and social history are always welcome to visit the Museum and find out more from the volunteers, many of whom have a healthcare background. The wearing of face-coverings is no longer mandatory but we encourage people to do so.

Please maintain social distancing and hand-hygiene and do not attend if you are feeling unwell or have tested positive for Covid19 in the last seven days. If you do decide not to wear a face covering, please respect others who choose to do so, especially in the confined space of the museum.

A maximum of six people plus volunteers will be allowed in each room at any one time. Group bookings for six or more people can be made at other times by prior arrangement. Please contact: fhsc.histsoc@chester.ac.uk or 01244 512126.

Access is via main Wheeler Building reception (formerly County Hall) opposite the River Dee. Please use city centre car parks or public transport and the address is: University of Chester, The Wheeler Building, Castle Drive, Chester CH1 1SL. The University of Chester Beehives

The University of Chester bee team began in 2021 as a collaboration between the Grounds and Gardens team and also the Catering team who are busy working hard to maintain and protect the bees!

The team now have three very healthy hives that are doing extremely well – and are very likely to establish more hives next year! The current task this month is to make sure the bees are well fed and that the hives are insulated ready to get them through the winter months.

The hives are in a very secluded location in the vicinity of our Exton Park site – in tranquil grounds where they cannot be disturbed.

The team have been lucky enough to have expert guidance and training since the start from Dr Louise Taylor (associate Professor in Health and Social Care here at the University of Chester) and her daughter Sophie who are both passionate beekeepers.

An exciting development for next year is a new cut flower garden adjacent to the beehives, which will be all grown from seed by the team and will provide our bees with a plentiful supply of additional pollen throughout the year. Several months ago, the team collected their first ever jars of honey.

A small number of these could possibly go on sale sometime in the near future – if you have any questions, drop Lisa from the team an email l.owen@chester.ac.uk. Alternatively, follow them on Instagram @universityofchestergardens for any updates!

I AM Remarkable

Start Date: 7 December 2022 1:00 pm

End Date: 7 December 2022 3:00 pm

Location: Online

I AM Remarkable is a Google inspired initiative empowering women and other underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond. Many of us struggle when it comes to talking about our own accomplishments. Cultural and gender modesty norms as well as impostor syndrome can prevent anyone from acknowledging their remarkable attributes and expressing their achievements.

The session will allow you to:

  • Learn the importance of self-promotion in your personal and professional life
  • Equip you with the tools to develop this skill.
  • Challenge the social perception around self-promotion

The training will be facilitated by a member of our Careers and Employability team, it will be a safe space to develop skills, engage in discussions, and allow self-reflection.

Please note, due the interactive nature of the workshop, spaces will be limited to 15 students for each session. If you book a session, please attend or ensure you cancel in sufficient time.
