Reclaim the Night March Banner Making

Start Date: 29 November 2024 5:00 pm

End Date: 29 November 2024 6:45 pm

Location: Chester Students' Union, Exton Park

Come and join the University of Chester’s Sexual Violence Liaison Officer (SVLO) Service to create powerful banners for the Reclaim the Night March and Vigil in support of North West Sexual Violence Awareness Week!

The original UK Reclaim the Night marches date back to 1977, when English cities marched to protest the police’s response to the murder of several females. Police encouraged women not to go out at night, contributing to the victim blaming narratives society promotes.

Women organised these marches to assert their right to walk freely and safely at night without fear of violence or harassment. The event has since become a symbol of resistance against sexual violence, rape culture and inequality.

Reclaim the Night marches fight for everyone to have the right to be safe from sexual violence and harassment, without the need to hide from the dark in their own homes.

At 6.45pm we will make our way into Chester City centre to join the Reclaim the Night March, all attendees are welcome to join.

Introducing the Your Money Team

Money on your mind?

University life brings new challenges, and managing finances can be a big one. This is where the Your Money team comes in. We’re here to help you navigate this area with practical advice, budgeting tools, and one-to-one support.

We want to help you make sense of your money, so we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to give you more opportunities to talk about your finances than ever before.

Here are some of the exciting things we’ve got coming up this academic year to make sure you can get the support you need:

🗣️ Look out for our new ‘Talk Money Monday’ drop-in launching in January 2025. This new service offers you the chance to chat to one of our Student Money Advisers about all things money. Whether you’re having trouble with student funding, concerned about your spending, or have any other money-related questions, we’ll guide you on the support available to you and the steps you can take to improve your situation.

Keep an eye on the Shout Out platform and the Your Money Portal page for more details closer to the launch date.

🗣️ We’re really excited to announce our new Student Money Adviser, Sara, has joined the team. This means we can now deliver more than 25 appointments each week, making it quicker and easier to get the advice and support you need.

🗣️ We’ll be hosting a series of drop-ins and pop-ups across our UoC sites throughout 2025. Come along and chat with our Money Advisers to learn more about what we do and how we can help you manage your money with confidence.

If you’d like to book an appointment with one of our Student Money Advisers, give our Student Services Helpdesk a call on 01244 511550 or drop them an email at studentservices@chester.ac.uk.

Looking after your Financial Wellbeing

You’ve heard of mental wellbeing and physical wellbeing, but how about financial wellbeing?

Financial wellbeing is simply about feeling comfortable and in control in your finances, both now and in the future. Your financial wellbeing can also impact on your physical and mental wellbeing, so it’s important to look after it.

It’s a big learning curve for many and something which needs to be nurtured over time, so it’s OK if you don’t get it straight away. Sometimes you might even need a helping hand, so we’ve highlighted the best ways to get started and some of the support we can offer if things go a little off track.

Here’s how to get started:

  • Create a budget. Knowing what’s going in and out of your bank account is the most important thing you can do to keep control of your money. It’s really easy to do, but if you need a helping hand, book an appointment with our Student Money Advisers who’ll work with you to put your budget together and find other ways you can cut down your costs.
  • Explore some of the best student discounts, but remember if you’re saving 20%, you’re still paying for 80% of the cost, so only buy what you actually need. You’re not really saving money if you weren’t planning on buying it in the first place.
  • Make sure you’re up to speed with your banking. Most banks have budgeting tools built into their apps so you can track your spending and know when you need to slow down.
  • If you’re on the move, have a listen to a podcast full of money saving tips.
  • Check out our Chester Aspire Portal for more tips and guidance on how to get off to a flying start with your finances.

If you’d like to book an appointment with one of our Student Money Advisers, give our Student Services Helpdesk a call on 01244 511550 or drop them an email at studentservices@chester.ac.uk.
