Draft Coach and Academic Skills support

We know a lot of you are working on assignments or assessments at the moment so we just wanted to remind you that Turnitin Draft Coach is available free for all students.

Draft Coach is an online writing tool for Microsoft Word for the web which helps you to improve your writing skills by providing feedback on your drafts. It allows you to:

  • Identify grammatical mistakes and receive explanations of issues.
  • Identify potential missing citations and references to avoid accidental plagiarism
  • Check your work for similarity (three checks per document).

Click here to find out more.

Don’t forget; all students also have access to our Academic Skills team. They can also provide feedback on your work through their Feedforward service and can provide additional support in areas such as maths and statistics, exam revision and reflective writing.

Crossing Borders 2: Joining up the dots

Start Date: 15 June 2023 10:00 am

End Date: 15 June 2023 3:00 pm

Location: The Garret Theatre at Storyhouse

The Department of Music, Media and Performance presents Crossing Borders 2: Joining up the dots.

Heavily influenced by Zygmunt Bauman’s books Identity (2004) and Community (2013), we have invited several individuals, organisations and groups to discuss interesting projects and initiatives in our region.

This promises to be a very special event featuring some amazing guests. We’ll be exploring three main themes for this year – CommunityIdentity and Belonging – from a variety of perspectives, including Art, Heritage, Marginalised Groups, Youth and Community Arts and Theatre.

It will be a very fast past event: each presentation will only last 15 minutes to allow us to hear from lots of different perspectives and experiences during the event.

The event is 100% free – and even includes free coffee/tea and lunch! Just like last year, all information gathered from this event, including written records, images, recordings, and evaluations from attendees and presenters, will be compiled into an evaluation report which all participants will be granted access to.

Cost of living: Balancing work and studies to boost your income

In addition to boosting your bank account, working while you study can also add a spark to your CV and help you to develop valuable skills that will impress future employers.

We know it can be a tricky juggling act, so we’ve rounded up our top tips to help you stay in control and balance your work and lectures effectively.

Prioritise your studies

When you’re looking for work, focus on what days you’ll be working, how long the shifts are, and how it fits around your lectures.

While it might be tempting to grab as many hours as possible, aim to work for 15 hours or less each week. This ensures you earn some extra cash without compromising the standard of your work.

Budget, budget, budget!

Budgeting is the key to understanding if you have a surplus or a shortfall each month. Download our budget planner here to get started.

If you find yourself with a surplus, you have the freedom to spend (or better yet, save!). If you have a shortfall, you can use this as a guide to how many hours you need to work to balance your books.

If you’re still short after working your 15 hours, head to our Portal page here to learn more about the support we can offer, including tips on managing your money, and information about our Financial Assistance Fund.

Talk to your employer

Having open communication with your employer is vital to striking a good balance between work and study. If you have looming essay deadlines or worse still, exams, let them know well in advance that you need to reduce or change your working hours. This way, they can plan ahead and try to accommodate your request.

Take care of yourself

Balancing work and study can take a while to get right, so it’s important to look after yourself. Make sure you get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and regularly exercise.

Avoid overloading your schedule and know your limits. Maintaining your mental and physical wellbeing is essential for productivity and long-term success.
