Fashion Fictions & Patch Challenge

The Pop-Up Patch Challenge team will be back on Monday 4 December, 2pm – 4pm, in Seaborne Library Exhibition Space.

Bring your lost buttons, dropped hems, holey jumpers, worn jeans and unravelled cuffs, and let the Patch Challenge team show you how you can bring your unworn clothing back to life and back into use. 

Both students and staff are welcome to come along for some help with garment repair. Also in the Exhibition Space is a visiting exhibition, Fashion Fictions, which showcases a wide range of imagined futures for the fashion industry, all of which illustrate more sustainable garment systems. Fashion Fictions is open to visit from 20th November to the end of term.

SERKEI Public Event: Aja Barber and Hasna Kourda in conversation

The next SERKEI public event brings together two of the most influential people in sustainable design, writer and stylist Aja Barber, and founder of Save Your Wardrobe fashion app, Hasna Kourda. Aja and Hasna will be ‘in conversation’ from 6pm, Thursday 7 December, via an MS Teams Live online event. . 

Drawing on their respective expertise in trying to create systemic change in the fashion and garment sectors, Aja and Hasna will reflect on how the unsustainability of consumer culture in the Global North might be unpicked and tackled through a range of industry-led and consumer-led changes.

A series of lightning talks, sharing insight into innovation and the potential of tech to make a difference on our journey to Net Zero.

Jackie Kay: Full Fig: Many Writers a Writer Makes

Jackie Kay is an internationally renowned poet and novelist and from 2014-2022, Chancellor of the University of Salford. She has written widely on themes of identity, including race, gender and sexuality. In recognition of her wide-ranging literary achievements, Jackie was appointed in 2016 to the prestigious position of Makar or National Poet of Scotland. Library online Dissertation series: Introduction to Endnote

The session will include the following:

  • Setting up your EndNote library and creating a basic group set to manage your references
  • How to add references both manually and via export options using subject databases (including Library Search)
  • How to find or export PDF’s of documents into your library and attach to record
  • Using Cite While You Write to create bibliographies / reference lists in Word and choose an output style.
