Our Academic Skills (ASk) team work with students across all levels and on all courses, to develop your confidence in skills such as academic writing, structuring essays, referencing, numeracy skills, data analysis and interpreting statistics.

Check out the changes they’ve made to their service as a direct result of your student feedback.

Moodle redevelopment

You told us that the current Moodle pages were difficult to navigate and find relevant resources so both the Academic Skills and Maths and Statistics Moodle pages have undergone a redesign with five key skills being prioritised and a greater range of resource types for students to access including bitesize videos on core skills.

Twilight/out of hours

Due to placements, teaching and external commitments, you weren’t always able to engage with the Academic Skills team within core university hours. Feedback indicated that this was a barrier to engaging with the team and developing students’ skills.

  • Out of hours 1-2-1 appointments (up to 7pm) are now available two days per week (Mondays and Tuesdays).
  • A short series of twilight sessions have also been developed and delivered outside of core hours (6pm-7pm) with recordings available.
  • A greater range of asynchronous resources are available to students outside of core hours, including redesigned Moodle pages, access to our podcast, The Skills Pod, and promotion of the availability of Turnitin Draft Coach.

ASk Together Sessions

Feedback from students in Student Voice Meetings and informal mechanisms indicated that, at high-use times of the year, there is a long lead-in time for appointment availability. As a result we have rebranded and increased availability of our ASk Together sessions. These sessions are available for groups of students to develop specific academic skills.
