Diversity Festival: A writer & new mother reimagines birth & aftercare (Wheeler)

Start Date: 1 March 2023 11:00 am

End Date: 1 March 2023 12:00 pm

Location: CRV150, Wheeler

A writer and new mother reimagines birth and aftercare.

Jessica Hatcher-Moore is an award-winning journalist and the author of After Birth: How to Recover Body and Mind, a book that aims to empower new mothers with knowledge and understanding.

Jessica’s writing sheds light on under-reported issues and uses the power of storytelling to bring people together. She was the Guardian correspondent in Nairobi before moving to live with her family in the hills of North Wales.

In conversation with the University’s Professor Chantal Davies, Jessica will share more information on her book, a straight-talking new mums’ guide to physical and mental health after having a baby. The book provides balanced advice with no agenda that informs, entertains and empowers women to reclaim their post birth selves. “Information is power and information is exactly what After Birth delivers”, said Milli Hill, author of The Positive Birth Book.

A fantastic opportunity to attend one of the Festival’s much-loved In Conversation events and hear more from a fantastic author on an important topic.

As with all events, this is open to all; however this event may be of most interest to midwifery and other Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society students and to parents – new, existing and prospective.

Diversity Festival: Festival Launch – Finding our Everest – tacking advantage of adversity

Start Date: 27 February 2023 12:45 pm

End Date: 27 February 2023 2:15 pm

Location: Binks 017, Exton Park

Many of us strive to stand out from the crowd. Others aren’t given the choice – and it can either drive or define us.

Following a welcome to the Diversity Festival 2023 from the University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Eunice Simmons, we are delighted to welcome Alex Staniforth to launch the Festival.

Alex Staniforth is no stranger to overcoming adversity. At 27, he has already survived the two biggest disasters in Mount Everest history as a teenager. But his biggest challenges have been much closer to home in Kelsall, suffering with childhood epilepsy, bullying, a lifelong stammer and mental ill health – anxiety, depression and eating disorders. Now he is a record-breaking adventurer, motivational speaker and author committed to helping others to overcome their own challenges. In 2020 he founded Mind Over Mountains, a charity restoring mental health through nature.

The University of Chester is so excited to welcome Alex to launch our 2023 Festival. The Festival’s theme is ‘Action for Change’, which focuses on the actions we can all take to make meaningful changes to inclusion and belonging. Throughout the festival, participants will be inspired by our diverse range of speakers, all of whom have really taken action for change – however big or small – and Alex certainly embodies this theme!

Through his adventures at home and the Himalayas, join Alex to explore the opportunities in adversity, how to build your own Sherpa team and take the first step towards positive change.
