Register for a GP and ensure your vaccinations are up to date

Whether you’re a new or existing student, it’s really important to look after your health whilst you’re at the University.

Due to lots of students being in one space, infectious diseases can spread easily at university so it’s important to ensure you’re signed up to a local GP and up to date with your vaccinations to minimise your risks:

✳️ Registering with a local GP early in the year will make it much easier to get an appointment when you’re at university. Find a local GP.

✳️ The Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine is available for free to any student who has not yet received two doses. If you’re not sure whether you’re up to date, you can contact your GP practice to confirm. If you haven’t had two MMR doses, please arrange a free catch-up vaccination as soon as possible.

Measles and Mumps are both viral illnesses which can, in rare cases, lead to serious complications.

✳️ The MenACWY vaccine protects against meningococcal disease that can cause meningitis (dangerous swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal column) and septicaemia (blood poisoning) which can both trigger sepsis.

Both of these diseases can be fatal or cause life-changing disabilities. The MenACWY vaccine is the best form of protection against these deadly diseases and is available to anyone under the age of 25.

Unfortunately, the MenACWY vaccine does not protect against all forms of meningococcal disease, like MenB, so it’s important to know the signs and symptoms and act quickly if you suspect you or someone you know may be suffering from meningitis

Graphic showing the signs and symptoms of Meningitis

✳️ Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease which is spread through the air when a person who has TB coughs, sings, laughs, or sneezes. Check out the common symptoms:

Symptoms of TB

Although infectious, TB is curable – so please visit your GP if you have any concerns.

Understanding how and when you can use Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

The applications of Generative AI (GenAI) are developing all the time. Having a critical understanding of GenAI is an important digital skill to develop so that you understand the opportunities and challenges that this technology brings.

As a student at the University of Chester, it is important you have a good understanding of our policy regarding using GenAI in your assessments:

  • Before starting a piece of work, you should always check the assessment brief to identify if you are permitted to use artificial intelligence within your assessment and how you are permitted to use it. If you do use an artificial intelligence tool, you must clearly show which parts of your work have been created by using it and you must describe how you have used the tool.  A declaration tool to support you to do this is available on the assessment information tile within each Moodle module.
  • If you misuse an artificial intelligence tool or fail to declare the use of artificial intelligence in your work and you are later found to have breached the Academic Conduct Policy because of this, the penalties can be serious.

Complete the AI Moodle Module

All students have access to the Generative Artificial (GenAI) Intelligence Literacies module on Moodle which aims to improve your understanding of these tools and provides guidance to help you make decisions about responsible use of the tools, if your assessment brief indicates that you are permitted to use them.

Please take the time to complete this training module before you start any assessment in which you are permitted to use GenAI.

Further guidance on GenAI

If you are unsure about whether GenAI is permitted for use in your assessments, the Academic Conduct and GenAI Declaration tile on the GenAI Literacies Moodle module offers further guidance and step by step instructions about how to check whether you can use GenAI and how to declare its use.

More information

For more information, please visit our Generative Artificial Intelligence Literacies Moodle training module. On this site you can find helpful information on a range of associated topics, including prompt engineering, critically evaluating sources and the different types of GenAI tools available.
