Working in the UK on a Student Visa
Your digital visa (eVisa) will show how many hours you are permitted to work.
If you are enrolled on a full-time course lasting at least six months, and you hold a Student Visa, you are permitted to:
- Work up to 20 hours per week during term time (Bachelor’s/Undergraduate, Master’s/Postgradaute Taught, and Postgraduate Research degrees)
- Work up to 10 hours per week during term time (Foundation programmes)
- Work full-time during official University vacation periods
- Work full-time after your official course end date (as stated on your CAS), if you have fully completed your course
Important reminders:
- A week is defined as a 7-day period starting on Monday to Sunday
- Training hours count towards your total weekly hours
- Your pay and your working hours are separate. This means that you can work during a time when you get holiday pay for a different job, and you can receive more than 20 hours of holiday pay in a week. This is because only your hours actively working are counted.
You are NOT permitted to:
- Work as a doctor in training
- Work as a professional sportsperson or coach
- Work as an entertainer
- Be self-employed or run a business
- Fill a full-time, permanent vacancy
Students on a Standard Visitor Visa are not permitted to undertake any paid or unpaid work.
