University of Sanctuary Forum

Start Date: 7 May 2026 12:00 pm

End Date: 7 May 2026 1:30 pm

Location: Senate House, Exton Park

Colleagues and students are warmly invited to attend the University of Chester’s Sanctuary Forum on Thursday 7th May, 12pm-1.30pm in the Senate House Exhibition Space, Exton Park Campus (tea and coffee served from 11.45am, with lunch provided).

Building on our recognition as a University of Sanctuary last year, we are continuing to develop this work across the institution and in partnership with our wider community. This Forum brings together colleagues, students and external partners to share ideas, showcase activity, and explore opportunities for collaboration.

We are pleased to welcome a range of speakers. Dr Merdzana Obralic Cibiz (Liverpool John Moores University) and Dr Salih Cibiz (LJMU/UoC) will share their research on female business leaders from refugee backgrounds, focusing on the skills and qualities developed through their experiences.

Dr Nudzejma Cakir (Bursa Uludag University, Turkey), an expert in applied linguistics, will explore how language shapes the social integration of immigrants and refugees, using a case study of Bosnian communities in St. Louis, USA.

We will also hear from Chester City of Sanctuary, who will provide updates on Refugee Week (15–21 June) and opportunities to get involved.

The Forum offers an opportunity to learn more about ongoing work under the University of Sanctuary banner, as well as to connect with colleagues, students and partners engaged in this area.
