Study Spaces around the University

Stuck for somewhere to study around each of our sites?

Check out some of our favourite places to study here at the University.

Chester –

  • The Dining rooms at Exton Park are a great place to study and also grab a drink or a bite to eat from – you don’t need to be a catered student to use this space – everyone is welcome
  • Seaborne Library at Exton Park has an open plan workspace with book collection, bookable study pods and even a café downstairs with plenty of space to study
  • You can also book a hot desk at our UoC Work Spaces which are located opposite Molloy at Exton Park. More info.
  • The Riverside Innovation Centre or RIC, which is next door to Wheeler, has a fab coffee shop which you can study from. Wheeler Library has a variety of areas for group or quiet study and includes some bookable rooms.  There is a book collection and helpdesk and the library that is open on evenings and weekends.
  • The Queen’s Park Library provides well equipped drop-in and bookable spaces.
  • Brasserie de Gaulle offers scenic views of the city found in Churchill House at Queen’s Park
  • The Learning Resource Centre at the Creative Campus, Kingsway is a great place to read a book as well as study from

Warrington –

  • The first floor in Time Square has an open plan workspace, a book collection, laptop borrowing facilities and bookable study pods (pods booked through enquiries@chester.ac.uk)
  • The Student Coworking Hub in Remond House Ground Floor 005 has comfy seats and work desks to use
  • Study Pods 3, 4 and 5 in Time Sq. are now bookable through Booked on portal Booked Scheduler (chester.ac.uk)

Shrewsbury –

  • The bright and spacious UCS Library offers open access and bookable study spaces suitable for individual and group study. Comfortable seating spaces with wifi phone charging facilities are provided in two alcove areas.
  • The 24 hour PC area provides a microwave, vending machines, sofas as well as study spaces
  • There are a number of small break out areas dotted around the UCS building suitable for informal study spaces

Birkenhead –

  • The library at Marriss House has study spaces, designated quieter study spaces and IT suites

Tanks on the Streets: The Uprising of 17 June 1953 in East Germany – A Public Lecture by Dr Richard Millington

A Public Lecture by Dr Richard Millington, Senior Lecturer in German, Department of Languages and Cultures, University of Chester.

This event is hosted by The Culture and Society Research Knowledge Exchange Institute and will take place on Wednesday, 15 March 2023 from 6-7.30 pm, Wheeler Building CRV139.

Richard Millington is Senior Lecturer in German at the University of Chester. He has published on memory and East Germany, as well as crime and criminality behind the Berlin Wall. In this paper, Richard discusses what happened in East Germany 70 years ago. On 17 June 1953, over 500,000 East Germans took to the streets to demand political change. Richard will talk about the causes of the unrest, what happened on the day, and the aftermath of the demonstrations. Richard will place the uprising in the broader context of joint-German history and address the significance of the event in German society today.

Need for Speed: The Sound of Racing Games – A Public Lecture by Ruth Dockwray (Chester, MMP)

This event is hosted by The Culture and Society Research Knowledge Exchange Institute and will take place on Wednesday, 22 February 2023 from 6-7.30 pm, Wheeler Building CRV139.

Ruth Dockwray is an Associate Professor of Popular Music at the University of Chester. She has published on aspects of video game music in addition to papers on the musicology of music production. In this paper, Ruth discusses how audio and music plays a particularly strong role in both the presentation of ‘reality’ and the narrative arc of video games. With specific focus on racing games, aspects such as the way music has been composed along with the use of surround sound will be considered to show how a sense of realism and immersion is created for the player.

A film screening of The Letter – A message for Our Earth

Made by the producers of ‘My Octopus Teacher’, IMDB says the film ‘tells the incredible story of the Laudato Si’ encyclical letter by Pope Francis, through the eyes of frontline leaders battling the ecological crisis across continents. A powerful and surprising dialogue the Pope in the Vatican brings new hope for our common home’
