Moving in tips

Getting ready to move into University of Chester accommodation?

We know the whole moving process can be pretty stressful but don’t panic – our Residential Advisers (the team that support students in UoC-owned accommodation) have come up with some top tips to help you out:

🏡 You’ll find a list of things you should and shouldn’t bring on page 8 of the Resident Guide – make sure you also check pages 9 and 10 for information on regulations and guidance:

🏡 Check your University emails for a link to your Residential Life Teams group, so you can find others sharing your accommodation.

🏡 Look out for us in the blue Residential Life tops – we’re here to help.

🏡 Take some time to explore and get to know your surroundings.

🏡 Bring photos of friends/family and make your room feel like your home from home.

🏡 Don’t bring everything you own; only buy essentials and explore charity shops for good deals once you get here.

🏡 Organise your room and keep it tidy – it makes a real difference.

🏡 Say hello to your flatmates – they may be feeling overwhelmed so don’t lock yourself away, invite them to hang out, cook for them. Try to initiate activities with housemates.

🏡 Smile and say Hi – don’t wait for an invitation to hang out. This will also help you to gain more confidence.

🏡 Get involved in as much as you can; Residential Life, Chester Students’ Union (CSU), Sport and Active Lifestyle, and Student Services have loads of activities for everyone and it’s a great way to meet people.

🏡 Get involved in Sports and Societies and get to know the people you live with at the beginning of term; it’s easier to make friends and connections when everyone is newly arrived.

🏡 Make sure you tidy and clean up after yourself in any communal kitchens or bathrooms.

🏡 Always use the extractor fan and keep kitchen doors closed when cooking – your housemates will not be happy if you set the fire alarm off!

🏡 Get to know your Residential Advisor.

Useful new student information

Joining the University soon? We just wanted to make you aware of a couple of important points which will make your life a bit easier on your first visit:

Cashless campus

All our sites across UoC are cashless. This means you won’t be able to use cash and you can only purchase items using your bank card at our sites. This includes all our catering outlets and shops.

Reusable cup scheme

We also operate a reusable cup scheme for all hot drinks. When you purchase a hot drink at our sites you have two options:

  • bring your own reusable mug/cup
  • take part in our resuable cup scheme. Pay £1 and you’ll receive your hot drink in a reusable mug. When you’ve finished your drink you can either return the cup for a token which you can use for another cup next time you need a caffeine hit, or you can keep the cup and use it again.

Security

Please ensure you wear your lanyard which shows your student ID when you visit our sites, This helps our Security team to identify you as a student and helps to keep our sites safe and secure for everyone. Starting UoC later this month? You can find info on where/when to pick up your student ID in your Welcome email (we have/will be sending this to your personal email address).

Printing credit

When you join the University, we’ll load £15 of printing credit on to your Student ID card. You can use this to print out your assignments at any of our on-site libraries. Just head to the “Print Credits” tile on the UoC app to check your balance and top up your credits.

Positive Action to support our communities

If you would like to volunteer, raise money, or help in other ways, there are many organisations across the country which support asylum seekers, refugees and marginalised people.

Organisations include Hope Not HateMigrant VoiceWomen for Refugee WomenRefugee ActionChoose LoveAmnesty UKUnicefBritish Red CrossRefugee CouncilCare4Calais and many more.

As well as national charities, there are local support groups offering support to individuals such as the Cheshire, Halton and Warrington Race Equality Centre.

Another thing you can do is think carefully about what sort of information you share online: is it from a verified, trusted source? Stay away from sharing anything which might identify accommodation where asylum seekers may be staying or could intensify divisions.

Positivity is vital in counteracting hateful rhetoric, whether that is in person among your friends, family, colleagues and in your community, or more widely online. Refugee Action points out: “A kind word or a smile can make such a difference to all of us. But it can mean even more to someone who has been forced to flee their home because of war and violence. It lets them know that they’re not alone.”

You can take part in Refugee Action’s Welcoming Messages action, writing words of kindness, solidarity and welcome to people who have come to the UK to seek safety.

Our inclusive community

The University of Chester is dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for all members of our university community. Everyone deserves to feel safe, regardless of race, religion, or background and we are committed to building a society where everyone can thrive, and where diversity is embraced, celebrated and valued.

Respect

As part of our RESPECT campaign, we work in partnership with Chester Students’ Union, police, third sector and our local community to help promote diversity, inclusivity, and unity.

As a member of the University, we ask all staff and students to behave responsibly and respectfully to others, whether they are other students, members of staff, visitors or members of the local community.

If you or someone you know has experienced or witnessed unacceptable behaviour such as harassment, discrimination, sexual assault, abuse, bullying or hate crime you can report it via our Report a Concern service. You can report an incident wherever it has occurred, for example off campus, during a placement and in the workplace. You can also email: report@chester.ac.uk

Hate Crime

If you’ve experienced a hate crime or hate incident, you can report it to the police by calling 101 or visiting a police station. You can also report if you witnessed a hate crime happen to someone else.

If you’re not sure if what happened was a hate crime, you can check if something is a hate crime. You can also find out more about hate crime reporting via Citizens Advice.

For instances of Islamophobia, you can report what happened to Tell MAMA. Visit their website for more information.

In an emergency, you should call 999.

They have separate, confidential rooms and commit to providing free impartial advice and guidance. More information can be found here: https://www.chestersu.com/advice

Chaplaincy

Our multi-faith Chaplaincy team is deeply committed to inclusion and building strong friendships between people of different religions, ethnicities and cultures. As faith leaders, our Chaplains are strongly connected to our faith communities in the North West. Our local communities are full of people who work together for the good of all – and therefore we have strong hope in difficult times. Revd Gill Reeve (Anglican Senior Chaplain) and Imam Zeryab Elhassan (Muslim Chaplain) are both available for students and staff, so please do get in touch with us if you would like to chat. Simply email chaplaincy@chester.ac.uk and ask for one of us to get in contact. We can chat with you in person or on Teams.

Safety and Security

We encourage you to be vigilant and keep safe and avoid areas where protests are occurring due to the potential for disruption and violence. In an emergency, you should call 999. Currently, the government is providing rapid additional support through the Protective Security for Mosques Scheme, alongside the support from local police forces. The new rapid response process means mosques at risk of violent disorder can be offered additional security personnel, providing communities with vital support and reassurance.

If any students have immediate concerns in relation to these events that may be affecting you on a University of Chester campus, please refer to Report a Concern or contact Security (security@chester.ac.uk or 01244 511 541) in the first instance.
