Top tips for getting on with your housemates

As assignment deadlines draw close, it’s normal for tensions to rise in your accommodation and for arguments to spill out with your housemates.

Check out our top tips on how resolve conflict constructively in your student accommodation:

1. Take a Breather

  • Avoid Immediate Confrontation: If emotions are running high, give everyone time to cool off before addressing the issue. Spend some time in your room, or even leave the house entirely to give everyone both mental and physical space.
  • Reflect: Think about the situation calmly and try to understand your own feelings and perspective.

2. Communicate Openly

  • Arrange a Meeting: Set aside a neutral time and place where everyone involved can talk without interruptions.
  • Be Honest and Respectful: Use “I” statements (e.g., “I felt hurt when…” rather than “You made me feel…”) to avoid sounding accusatory.
  • Listen Actively: Let each person share their side and have their say without interruptions.

3. Identify the Core Issues

  • Clarify the Problem: Is the conflict about shared responsibilities, respect, or something personal? Understanding the root cause is key to resolving it.
  • Acknowledge Differing Perspectives: Recognise that others may view the situation differently from how you see it.

4. Seek Solutions Together

  • Propose Compromises: Find ways to address the conflict that are fair and acceptable to everyone involved.
  • Set Ground Rules: If the conflict arose from shared living issues (e.g., cleanliness, noise), agree on house rules to prevent future disagreements.

5. Involve a Neutral Mediator

  • If direct discussions aren’t successful, involve a neutral third party to help mediate.

6. Establish Boundaries

  • Respect Personal Space: If it’s difficult to fully reconcile, agree on how to coexist peacefully without constant interaction.
  • Focus on Co-living Dynamics: Agree to maintain a courteous relationship, even if the personal friendship cannot be restored.

7. Prioritise Wellbeing

  • Seek Support: If the situation is affecting mental health, reach out to friends, family, a counsellor or your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT).  See below for more information on further support at the University.
  • Know When to Move On: If the situation is irreparable, consider options like changing rooms or housing arrangements for the future.

8. Learn from the Experience

  • Use this as an opportunity to grow in communication and conflict resolution skills, which are valuable in all aspects of life.
  • It’s essential to balance addressing the conflict with maintaining personal and academic priorities. Taking proactive steps can help turn a difficult situation into a constructive outcome.

Your Student Voice: International Student Barometer Survey 2023

At the University of Chester, your Student Voice is extremely important to us.

Thank you to any students who completed last year’s International Student Barometer Survey. Take a look at some of the changes and actions we’ve made in response to your feedback:

  • Our Catering team is working with our Student Race Advocates to ensure menus are more diverse and cater for all students.
  • Our Estates team are working hard to offer new additional university-owned accommodation in 2025. This should benefit international students who start outside of the main September induction window and sometimes struggle to find accommodation in the local area.
  • All programmes now publish an Assessment Schedule at the start of the programme to set expectations and reduce assessment stress. This should allow students to plan their time better and visualise the deadline timeline for their programme.
  • New for this year, our Student Experience/Induction team have introduced new International Welcome events which allow you to complete essential tasks, including collecting your BRP, setting up finance, completing your enrolment and visa checks all on one day. These events also feature Information Hubs, so you can find out more about key aspects of university life, including sport, Chester Students’ Union (CSU) and academic support in one place. These events are designed to save you time and act as an official welcome, no matter what time of year you start at the University.
  • Our Student Experience/Induction team have expanded our online Pre-arrival Programme and developed new Welcome to UoC pages on the external website, giving students access to essential information prior to receiving login credentials. This now includes arrivals checklists and links to online sessions for students to get involved in before they arrive in the UK. Based on your feedback, we added a dedicated session to explain university systems, such as Moodle, to help ease the transition and familiarise students with key platforms in advance.
  • We have created an enhanced arrival experience for new students by introducing Student Ambassadors who actively welcome, guide, and assist new arrivals throughout the enrolment process. Additionally, both professional services and academic staff are now present at key welcome events to provide guidance and answer any questions, creating a more supportive and welcoming environment from day one.
  • Our Careers and Employability team has introduced monthly Careers webinars just for international students. The series will cover topics including crafting a UK CV, how to effectively search for part-time jobs and placements and advice on interviewing in the UK. These sessions have been created specifically to help international students find part time work and graduate jobs while they’re in the UK.
  • We have simplified the application form for student jobs on campus (UniJob) to better support international students and provide weekly CV café style drop-ins for added support.
  • This year, Chester Students’ Union (CSU) has focused on running inclusive events which encourages students to make connections, regardless of their fee status. This proved very successful during Welcome Week with 17 events including Speed Friending, a Board Game Café and two Cinema Nights.

Culture and Society Research & Knowledge Exchange Institute public lecture: How Swiftly Does Swift’s Accent Shift?: The Language of Taylor Swift

Start Date: 28 November 2024 6:00 pm

End Date: 28 November 2024 7:15 pm

Location: Lecture Theatre CRV 139, Wheeler

This talk is a must for any ‘Swifties’ as our speakers explore the speech (both spoken and song performance) of Taylor Swift. Popular discussion from Taylor’s fanbase discusses how Swift’s earlier music was performed with a Southern American accent, while her more recent music is performed with a Northern American accent.

Guiding us through this talk are two Swiftie experts: Dr Helen West of University of Chester and Dr Esther Humphries, Independent Researcher. The pair have recently teamed up to research how Taylor Swift’s accent changes between her country and pop style music. This promises to be a fascinating evening for anyone interested in language, music, American culture and of course Taylor Swift!

Book your place.
