Public Lecture: It wasn’t all about Florence: A reflective discussion exploring some of the lives of those who contributed to the care of soldiers during the Crimean War

Start Date: 10 October 2023 4:00 pm

End Date:

Location: CRV016 (Music Room at the Wheeler Building)

Professor Elizabeth Mason-Whitehead, Associate Director, Chester Medical School and Dr Claire Chatterton, Open University and Visiting Professor, University of Chester marks the 170th anniversary of the beginning of the Crimean War.

Elizabeth Mason-Whitehead and Claire Chatterton will reflect on nursing in that conflict. In an illustrated talk, based on work in progress, they will consider some of those women, who travelled long distances to care for sick and wounded soldiers far from home and will explore some of the current debates about their contributions and the nature of their work.

As the Crimea is once again beset by war and conflict, it is timely to explore the impact of this earlier conflict on the development of nursing practice and mark its place in nursing history.
